The encoded protein (autoimmune regulator) plays an important role in immunity by regulating the expression of autoantigens and negative selection of autoreactive T cells in the thymus. Mutations in this gene cause the rare autosomal recessive systemic autoimmune disease termed autoimmune polyendocrinopathy with
